Oversimplification Works!

There’s an old saying that goes like this:

You can fool all of the people some of the time;
You can fool some of the people all of the time;
But you can’t fool all of the people all of the time!

I wonder if that’s true anymore, in these days of Twitter and 140-character statements.

Today, the United States Congress passed a so-called stimulus package. We’ve had the word “stimulus” shoved down our throats for months and months. Everywhere you look, in all the media formats and venues, it’s all about the stimulus bill or stimulus package. Anyone who disagrees in the slightest with the word “stimulus,” is instantly branded as attempting to destroy the future of the country.

This particular act of congress, as with the preceding one last November, has nothing whatsoever to do with stimulus, stimulation, or the economy itself. The promise is only to spend massive amounts of money, and there isn’t the least doubt in anyone with a reasoning mind that either bill will do anything other than zero, nothing, nada, zilch toward stimulating the economy.

If, as a result of bailing out the crooks and thieves who went along with the thugs in congress and wrecked the real-estate and banking industries, something DOES get fixed, it’ll be blind luck. In that event, the economy will recover in spite of the government. Certainly not because of the government!

And yet millions of people truly believe that we’re working toward stimulating the economy. Our buds up there on Capitol Hill are doing their best to kick-start a dead engine. They’re our friends, our help-mates, our compassionate guardians, and above all, our leaders.

It just goes to show you how important education is to a society and its economy. Without that education, sheer repetition eventually becomes indistinguishable from fact. With enough repetitions of the word “stimulus,” we now have a population that totally believes that indeed, a stimulus package has passed.

Tragically, that same population also believes that the package will actually change or affect the economy in a positive, helpful way.

In only a couple of months, the government has spent more money than ever before in all of our national history. We’ve just bankrupted at least two future generations, probably more. There isn’t the tiniest possibility that the money now slated to be printed and vomited into the markets will help anything whatsoever.

But try explaining that to the flock of twittering fools who can only understand 140-character explanations.

  1. This, I do agree. When Germany tried to just print notes during the Weimar days, there was no way they could control the inflation.
