The New Clinton Ventriloquism Act

I’m still wondering where Barack Obama came from. So are a lot of other people. It’s seriously unusual for someone to show up on the political scene, move right away to being a state Senator, and only a couple of years later, make a successful bid for the White House! Impossible? Obviously not. Improbable? Definitely!

So how did all this happen?

There’s plenty of discussion about the amazing marketing tactics the Obama campaign used. There’s lots of discussion about the money that flooded in. Where did that money come from? People say it was a lot of small, individual contributors. I wonder.

It’s true that right now, people everywhere the country have a lot of anxiety. Before the campaign, it was outsourcing and job layoffs. During the final days of the campaign, the economic crash and real estate collapse took hold. We’ve also had a lot of strained relations between various racial-ethnic groups, and many people viewed Obama as a move forward.

Fine. All that’s legitimate and part of a viable argument in favor of Mr. Obama’s election. But it doesn’t explain Barack Obama himself. Why not Colin Powell, or any other Afro-American politician who has an extensive track record, background, and so forth? Why someone so completely unknown?

With the election complete and the transition process under way, we find that Mr. Obama continues to say nothing about anything. No real solutions, no proposals, no specific plan of action…nothing. We don’t hear much at all from the President-elect, there aren’t regular news conferences, nothing other than continuing announcements of who is being chosen for the new administration.

And how many of those choices revolve around people who were important during the Bill Clinton administration?

One wonders how much of all this is a complex, deeply funded project to put into the White House someone who would capture the public imagination. Someone who has no real political clout, someone who will do what they’re told, someone who will open the door for the power behind the scenes?

Is Barack Obama the savior of all special interest groups? Or is he instead only a rallying symbol, useful in getting the votes? Assuming Hillary Clinton becomes Secretary of State, where will Bill Clinton end up? Will he continue making speeches and doing what most previous presidents have done? Or will we discover that somehow, Bill Clinton is in the news day after day after day?
