Sarah Palin Effigy Hanging not a Hate Crime

From the Los Angeles Times:

A West Hollywood Halloween display showing a likeness of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin hanging by a noose has caused a furor among some residents who reported it as a hate crime, authorities said Monday.

But Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said the mannequin sporting a beehive hairdo, glasses and a red coat does not rise to the level of a hate crime because it was part of a Halloween display.” (Oct 28, 2008)

Nah, it was all just good ‘ol American fun. It’s just free speech.

Hmm…suppose we found a life-size mannequin of an African-American male wearing a suit, and an “I love Illinois” button, hanging from a tree? It’s just some good clean fun for Halloween, right? And c’mon, it’s free speech and an artistic representation of those bad old days of the old South, right?

Oops, no sooner thought than created! This from the AP wires:

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) – University of Kentucky authorities were investigating Wednesday who hanged an effigy of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama from a tree on campus.

College spokesman Carl Nathe said the effigy was found Wednesday morning. Police immediately took it down. A faculty member said he saw the effigy with a noose around its neck, hanging from a high tree branch.

University President Lee Todd said he planned to apologize to the Obama family on behalf of the school and that he is “personally offended and deeply embarrassed by this disgusting episode.” (breitbard.com)

One of the reactions-responses:

“Raoul Cunningham, president of the Louisville chapter of the NAACP, said he is still trying to sort out his feelings “because there may be a double-meaning because Barack Obama is black, that he would be hung from a tree—that goes back to lynching.”

Well that’s interesting. Apparently the fact that the Palin effigy is also that of a women has no double meaning at all. It doesn’t harken back to anything, other than when women were what…just women? That’s probably why it’s not a hate crime, just a joke in poor taste.

  3. These reporters are the ones that should be hanging. They are the ones that are a joke. Frankly, I have had it and it seems like this election will never end. They are so biased and wouldn’t know the news if it hit them in the face.

Actually the people that had the time to do both the Palin one and Obama should get a life.

  4. Me too! I’ve heard enough on this election to last ten lifetimes. And I’ll bet we’ll be hearing about election problems and watching both sides contesting results until 2011.

  5. I’m getting really, really tired of Republicans claiming that the media is sooooo biased. Yes- they’re so incredibly biased, being owned by and large by largely conservative companies, some like FOX that clearly show favoritism towards the Republican party. This sounds like a broken record. When the Democrats were losing last election, the same things were being said- that the media was the mouthpiece of the conservatives, doing their best to ensure that every American was filled with piss and vinegar against Democrats. That things are different this time reverses things, and wallah- Republicans are whining that the media is being unfair. We dealt with it last time. Now its your turn.

As far as the effigy, well its tasteless and wrong on all accounts. But this isn’t an apples to apples kind of comparison. I don’t care how “even” the two are in comparison. When you have an effigy of a black man hanging by a noose, which is in fact something that did happen in the Rural South in the not so ancient past, there’s something really troubling about that. Its outright racial hatred. Nobody ever lynched a white woman. I am not defending the people who basically replied in kind with the same stunt using Mrs Palin. But the two are definitely not the same.

  6. Yes, but when you have an effigy of a white woman hanging by a noose, well, women are probably second-class citizens anyway, so what does it really matter, right? We don’t need to read anything extra into it, as we need to do with a black man’s effigy.

  7. Listen- as I mentioned, I condoned both. But you can’t honestly sit there and claim that an effigy of a white woman versus a black man hanging from a noose has the same cultural or historical meaning. Put yourself into the shoes of a black person. Then see how you would feel.
