Hurricanes: Ike vs. Katrina

Isn’t it amazing that a couple of years ago, following the hurricane Katrina wipe-out of New Orleans, we have the same situation in Galveston and the news media doesn’t really seem to care. Oh sure, the stories are there if you look, but compared to bailing out the morons who ripped off the entire country, hurricane Ike is a big yawn.

It’s pretty much the same way with anything involving regular folks, these days. We’re just the dopes who pony up the money to send to the government. They know far better than we do, they say, about how to spend it.

At the moment, estimates are that 75% of Galveston is now uninhabitable. I’d say that’s pretty close to how much of New Orleans was left uninhabitable. But remember all the screams and hysteria about hurricane Katrina? Remember how it was President Bush who caused the hurricane by ignoring global warming and doing whatever else?

We had months and years of stories about the devastation in Katrina, but apparently only about 10 minutes worth of summary news regarding Ike. I guess it’s a case of having seen one hurricane, you’ve seen ’em all. On to the next!

How come we aren’t hearing the yowling and screeching finger-pointing in this financial scandal? Could it be that the Democrats are demonstrably at fault? You can guaran-damn-tee that if it were the Republicans, we’d be under an avalanche of newsprint as big as the printed paper that’ll go into $750-billion! Katrina was totally the fault of Mr. Bush, but somehow, the Wall Street bailout “just happened, somehow.” Nobody knows. It’s a mystery.

  2. I was on a cleanup crew there. It’s a totally different attitude. Those folks are kickin butt getting that mess cleaned up instead of complaining about the government doing it for them. I couple of pictures for insurance purposes and away they go. They are totally awesome!

  3. We hear over and over again about how Americans take care of business, when things need to get done. We don’t whine and wait for The Government to take care of us, we get in and start working. I’m almost prepared to say that if something happens and doesn’t end up in the news it’s because people are handling it very well. If it does make it into the news, it’s because the media has a way to show problems, misery, and failed Republican policies.

Follow that logic, and it makes more sense to just ignore “the news.” Oh…but wait, that’s apparently what MOST people are starting to do!

  4. Honestly, I believe the reason that Ike isn’t as big of a deal is because there’s no one to point a finger at. Even though the hurricane was as catastrophic (if not more) than Katrina, there’s no one to blame for the problems afterwards. Houston (having experience after Rita) was prepared to evacuate just about everyone and after Ike hit FEMA was there right away and everyone was feed and given medical attention. There’s no major news story, because besides the hurricane itself, there was no damage done by any organization.
